Open Veins Of Latin America By Eduardo Galeano - 2063 Words

â€Å"Open Veins of Latin America†, by Eduardo Galeano tells the story of the history of both Latin America and parts of the Caribbean throughout the years and their struggle with poverty and the powers who exploited the countries throughout their existence from the day they were conquer by Europeans and as the years went by. The book begins with the history of the conquest of the new land and the search for both gold and silver, how the Europeans enslaved of the Native Americans and how their population declined at the time. Along with the slavement of the Natives and the search for gold, the conquistadors also brought diseases with them which caused many of the Natives to died, thus decreasing their population, the main cause being small pox. However one thing that Galeano tries to make clear is that is that although the conquistadors were in search of wealth, it is unclear is they actually benefited from all the goods that were taken out of the new world, but that instead i t created a tradition of goods being imported to parts of Europe. His book also looks at the political, social history, and of course the economic crisis in the history of Latin America. One of his arguments is that the develop countries played a part in those not so well develop countries, which we have grown to know in Latin America. Two Views of War in Poetry Nothing can impact society like war. War can be viewed as noble and just, or cruel and inhuman, as well as everything in between. War can make a man a hero, or it can make him a criminal. War affects everyone in society whether they are fighting in the trenches or waiting at home for a loved one to return. War has been the topic of countless pieces of literature, in the poem Dulce et Decorum Est, by Wilfred Owen and the poem To Lucasta, on Going to the Wars, by Richard Lovelace, both show two very different sides to war. Wilfred Owen, who fought in The First World War, tells a tale of the reality of war from the trenches. He cuts though the propaganda to show war for what it is to a young†¦show more content†¦Owen paints a grim picture of the war, and ends with a message to the reader. He warns us not to believe ?Dulce et decorum est Pro partria mori,?(27-28) Greek for ?It is sweet and fitting to die for one?s country.? Owen is trying to show us that war is not as noble as the propaganda tries to make use believe. The propaganda that Owen talks about seems to be the topic of Lovelace?s poem, ?To Lucasta, on Going to the Wars.? Lovelace seems to view war as a romantic endeavor, he personifies war as a lover, ?a new mistress now I chase.? He seems to be caught up in the romantic view of war. He sees the war as honorable, he longs for his sword, house, shield, and he seems to ache for that first kill. This poem seems to be written before the author went to war. Would his poem be different after he experienced war? These two authors show two very different views of war, one pointing out the horrors of the reality of war and one showing the romantic, noble view of the war. War takes on two very different views for the people who fight it and for the people who do not. It can?t be said which author is right and which is wrong. One of the most complex and misunderstood symbols in the book is Pearl, the daughter of Hester Prynne. Throughout the story Pearl develops into a prominent symbol of the â€Å"A†. In this essay the example of symbolism Pearl comes to represent will be explained. In the Scarlet Letter, Hester, for her sins, received a scarlet letter, â€Å"A† which she had to wear upon her chest for the rest of her life in Boston. This was the Puritan way of punishing her for her then criminal action of adultery. She wondered the streets to be given sour looks from all. This eventually caused so much mental and physical anguish that she eventually questioned why she should live if it weren’t for her Pearl. Pearl was a bundle of life sent from god to remind her of her wrong doing each and every moment and as a walking sermon to preach against sin for others. Hester’s wasted life the ultimate price that Hester paid for Pearl. With Pearl, Hester’s life was almost never filled with joy, but instead a constant reminder of the harsh word adultery. So in this case, Pearl symbolized the decimation of Hester’s life and mental state. Although Hester had so much trouble with Pearl, she still felt that Pearl was her ultimate treasure. Pearl was really the only thing that Hester had in life. Surely if Pearl wasn’t in Hester’s life, Hester would have taken her own life. Once and a while, Pearl would bring joy to Hester’s life, and that helped her to bare the guilt, lonesomeness, and isolation that became the main theme of her life. Pearl could be compared to weather, sometimes good, sometimes bad, but always changing. It was Pearl’s pounding storms that gave Hester so much grief. Pearl’s exuberant personality caused Puritans to believe she was a child of witchcraft and a mischievous little elf. But basically she represented everything that was the exact opposite of Puritan belief. Pearl’s taunting and malice disposition sometimes even caused Hester to make outbursts like â€Å"Thou art not my child! Thou art no Pearl of mine! † Some would believe the â€Å"A† stood for anti-puritan for her wild soul could never be confined by the rules of the conservative Puritan Society. One final way in which Pearl symbolized something in the novel was with her association with the scarlet letter. Pearl really was the scarlet letter, â€Å"a manifestation of sin†, because if Pearl would had never been born, Hester would not had to wear that burden upon her chest. Without that burden Hester would have led a much better life then the one she had throughout the novel. In conclusion, Pearl was an example of an underdog that ends up winning the fight no matter that all odds are against them. She still pulled through a winner despite the Puritans view. She herself knew she was above them so did the author Hawthorne. You could tell as you read her dialogue, and description. She was intelligent, inquisitive, and full of free thought; all things tied together makes for a complex person and a content one. But her main achievement would have to be being a source of survival for Hester.

The play, The Crucible, by Arthur Miller is a portrayal of the Salem witch trials. In the play there are three characters, Giles, Rebecca, and John all die at the end. These three people all have something in common which endangers them during the witch-hunt and later leads to their death. The one thing that these three people have in common is that they are all full of pride. One of these people is Giles Corey. In the play he is killed for two different things. One thing was that he would not give Danforth the name of the person who told him that Thomas Putnam was trying to get rid of the people in the town so that he could buy their land when they were gone. This is what originally got him arrested. Later they charged him as a witch and he would not answer his indictment. Because he didnt answer his indictment they could not charge him with being a witch. Therefore, he saved his name and his pride. She will not confess and she is later hung. Because of her stubbornness or pride she lost her life. Another person is John proctor who also his pride gets in the way of his decision making. One reason, which goes along with most of the people, was that he did not confess in the court. Later in the story, however, he does decide to confess. He signs the papers and everything. He is fine with this until he finds out that the signed confession will be posted on the door of the church. When he finds this out he then rips up the paper and does not confess. He is also hung for this and all because he wanted to save his name. In The Crucible many people were falsely accused and murdered for no reason. These three people could have prevented their own death if it were not for their pride. All they had to do was confess and spend some time in jail and that would be it.
